The Ideal Site for a Wind Turbine

There are countless factors which contribute to the viability of an onshore wind turbine site and the SIFFFT process will assess these in detail, but we've outlined a few key points to consider.

Setback from dwellings

Generally, we are looking to install large turbines, around 180m tall. These need to be well set back from dwellings not financially involved in the project.

Statutory Areas

It would not usually be possible to develop a large turbine within statutory ecological, landscape, or heritage areas, such as Specially Protected Areas (SPAs), Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs), and Historic England Conservation Areas (HECAs).

Setback from infrastructure

Distance needs to be maintained between turbines and large transmission overhead electric lines, gas or oil pipes, other electricity generation, and railways. Roads and smaller overhead lines are less of an issue but need to be considered.

Aviation

For obvious reasons turbines cannot be near the flight path of aircraft. Locations close to major airports are unlikely to be suitable.

If you're anything other than certain the land you have in mind would not be suitable, then get in touch, we're experts in onshore wind site identification and will be able to advise.
